Love your lungs. They’ll thank you later.
Love Your Lungs is a program dedicated to helping our residents quit tobacco through behavioral counseling and evidence-based resources.
Why love your lungs?
Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventable death in the United States. Smoking tobacco increases your chances of several chronic diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and cancers. At least 15% of smokers will develop lung cancer at some point in their lifetime. The Love Your Lungs program aims to help prevent these chronic illnesses through evidence-based resources and behavioral counseling.
16% of adults in Georgia smoke cigarettes.
We want to decrease this rate and prevent smoking-related deaths in the state.
How does tobacco use cause lung cancer?
Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals and radioactive material of which at least 70 are carcinogens.
Burning tobacco through products such as cigarettes causes these chemicals to be expelled into the air for individuals to inhale.
These carcinogens destroy the lining of the lungs which then causes the lung tissue to alter with each exposure.
As a result of continuous exposure, the cells in the lungs constantly alter, eventually leading to lung cancer.
